On an exceptional start to the season you would think a GM would sit back and enjoy. Instead GM Swaikoski went out and made 2 major trades.
The first of the trades was trading away the current team leader in points. Roenick was never in the plans for this year but after the inability to trade him prior to the season he was left on the second line to play some of his best hockey in years. This unfortunately was not enough for The Nordiques to keep him on the team. Instead they turn around and trade him to the Blues along with David Cooper for Kirk Maltby, Filip Kuba and a couple picks. This may look to weaken The Nordiques at the RW position but bolsters and already steady defense.
The second of these trades brings back a familiar face back to the team. GM Swaikoski wasn't looking to do anymore moving of players until The Penguins GM throw a name across his desk. Milan Hejduk was that name. A long time Nordiques has blossomed into a very well rounded player and compliments this team very well. The player going the other way was tough to give up but with the addition of newly drafted Ovechkin he became expendable. Along with the 2 players a few draft picks were also swapped.
With these trades the Nordiques will be shuffling their line-up a bit to accommodate the new players. Travis Moen will be called up to take the spot on LW while RW Fredrik Sjostrom will be sent down to further his development. The new lines will look as such.
Center Left Wing Right Wing Defense Defense
1 Radek Bonk Alexander Ovechkin Mark Recchi Filip Kuba Adrian Aucoin
2 Dainius Zubrus Owen Nolan Milan Hejduk Todd Simpson Steve Duchesne
3 Stephan Weiss Ryan Malone Kirk Maltby Frank Kaberle Kurt Sauer
4 Jason Williams Travis Moen Radam Vrbata David Hale Adrian Aucoin
When asked to comment GM Swaikoski simply had this to say. "Only time will tell if a trade works or not. I always want to make my team better. Today I did. As long as everyone gets along and plays well together this will be a very successful season. If not, it will be a busy trade deadline!"
