UFAs are any player whose contract has expired and is 27 years of age or older. There is no compensation required if these player switch teams. These players CAN be offered bonuses, but their bonus offers can NOT exceed 3x what their yearly contract offer is. Review - in attempts to address signing bonuses being used as obvious attempts to bypass salary cap issues. GMs forget that Capital Gains Taxes exist. So sending a player a few million dollars in one chunk, would in reality result in that large chunk being ripped away from them by "the man".
Presigning Period:
From after the trade deadline to the beginning of the playoffs, team have the chance to pre-sign and player with one year left on their contract to an extension, before the player can hit the open market. During this time, no player can take a cut in the yearly base salary in order to sign a new contract. In previous years,(2001-2004) there have been attempts to suppress outrageous salaries resulting in players signing for less. Now that most of the outrageous salaries have been taken care of, any player being presigned will have to get an increase in salary, else they hit the open market to be bid on.
