Baltimore Earns Playoff Spot With Four Game Winning Streak
Baltimore - The Baltimore Blades got the final two points they needed to make the playoffs and the Saints failed to hold on to the 8th and final playoff position in a Blades season filled with adversity and disappointment.
Minutes after Baltimore took a 6-0 victory from the Jets the entire franchise was scoreboard watching. The Blades started the night 1 point behind the Saints, and with the Blades victory the Saints NEEDED a win of their own to clinch a playoff spot. They managed only a single point in a tie versus the Bruins. The two teams, Baltimore and Minnesota, both finished with 78 points, with Baltimore coming out on top with more regular season victories.
"We've had an up and down season but we kept it together tonight and stayed in the game," Blades coach Guy Carbonneau said. "Our major objective was to get into the playoffs."
"We had some tough times throughout the season and it hasn't been the easiest one," Blades captain Alexander Mogilny said. "But the way we've been playing, the way we've been handling everything that's gone on off the ice, what's happened the last month, I'm really proud of our team."
John LeClair scored FOUR CONSECTUTIVE even strength goals and added an assist on the Blades sixth goal. Patrick Marleau and Slava Kozlov also scored and Cristobal Huet made 32 saves for his first shut-out of the season.
The Blatimore Blades now face the New Jersey Knights in the first round of the playoffs. Baltimore was 1W-2L-3T versus the Knights, outscored 19-15 in the six games.
